5 for Friday

5 for Friday: cookbooks inspired by books

Cookbooks inspired by books and the literary world is a very specific niche and one that I can’t get enough of. My love for cookbooks comes from a combination of my general book hoarding tendencies, my excuse that it was “research” for my food blog, and my belief that cookbooks are totally practical. With over 250 cookbooks in my collection, I have come to the conclusion that even if I cooked a new recipe every day FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE, I will never use every recipe in the cookbooks I own but I’m ok with that.

I’ll do another ‘5 for Friday’ in the future with my favourite cookbooks but in the meantime, how about a look at some cookbooks that were inspired by other books?

A Feast of Ice and Fire by Chelsea Monroe-Cassel & Sariann Lehrer

A Feast of Ice and Fire by Chelsea Monroe-Cassel & Sariann Lehrer

This is one of my favourite book-inspired cookbooks because I am a HUGE Game of Thrones fan. I read the books years before the TV phenomenon and have tried several of these recipes already.

Based on A Game of Thrones (and officially sanctioned), each recipe has two versions. The first version is a historical recipe, using ingredients as close to the original as possible and the second version updates the recipe and gives it a more modern update.

Outlander Kitchen by Theresa Carle-Sanders

Outlander Kitchen by Theresa Carle-Sanders

This cookbook, officially sanctioned by Diana Gabaldon (author of the Outlander series), is beautiful. I haven’t had a chance to cook from it yet, but friends of mine who are huge fans of Outlander (the books and the TV series) have told me this is one of their favourite cookbooks and they use it all the time.

Carle-Sanders is a professional chef and founder of OutlanderKitchen.com. With over 100 recipes, you can definitely celebrate your love of all things Outlander.

The Cat Who… Cookbook by Julie Murphy & Sally Abney Stempinski

The Cat Who... Cookbook by Julie Murphy & Sally Abney Stempinski

The Cat Who… series was one of my favourite cozy mysteries series growing up so to find it had a cookbook was pretty fun. My sister gifted this to me years ago so I’ll probably going to pull it out soon to cook from again.

Although most of these recipes are nothing extraordinary, it’s still fun to think of Qwill, Koko and YumYum sitting down to enjoy some of the dishes described in this cookbook.

The Unofficial Harry Potter Cookbook by Dinah Bucholz

The Unofficial Harry Potter Cookbook by Dinah Bucholz

As far as cookbooks go, this one isn’t that great. If this wasn’t related to Harry Potter, I would have never bought it.

Just some of the things I have against it – there are NO photos (not a single one!), the author admitted she hadn’t tested some of the recipes (seriously, what?) and in a cookbook inspired by Harry Potter, there isn’t a recipe for Butterbeer (again, WHAT?).

But, out of all the Harry Potter cookbooks I’ve seen, this is still the best one. There are a lot of recipes that are worth trying – some are Harry Potter inspired and others are just regular recipes.

Tequila Mockingbird by Tim Federle

Tequila Mockingbird by Tim Federle

Everyone knows a good dinner party isn’t just about the food, right? Tequila Mockingbird is filled with literary-inspired drinks – it’s a great conversation starter and perfect for your next cocktail party. Now that my home bar is well stocked with whisky and gin, I think it’s time to start mixing!

Some of the punny drink names include The Pitcher of Dorian Grey Goose, The Last of the Mojitos and Love in the Time of Kahlua.
