[review] The Adventurers and the Sea of Discovery by Jemma Hatt

The Adventurers and the Sea of Discovery is the sixth book in Jemma Hatt’s fun Middle Grade series about a group of kids who get into all sorts of, well, adventures, around the globe. I love the sense of fun and friendship that runs throughout the series and they’re good stories, regardless of your age.

A secret hidden deep under the sea is about to surface…

Arriving in Greece on the trail of a missing friend, The Adventurers land themselves in a mystery filled with suspense. An ancient map has been discovered, but where does it lead? Who are the menacing figures pursuing them at every turn?

Join Lara, Rufus and the gang as they set sail for an island-hopping escapade!

Deep sea treasure and a missing friend

Lara and Rufus’ friends, Tom and Maye are visiting while Lara’s mother Sarah and Maye’s brother Karim are off to a work conference. Uncle Logan is left in charge of the kids again, only this time he doesn’t have the rational voice of his girlfriend Dee around – she’s dumped him and gone off to Greece to scout filming locations.

It’s not long after Tom and Maye arrive that Logan gets a call from Dee’s father. It seems that Dee hasn’t checked in for awhile and he fears that she’s gone missing. Of course, Logan takes off for Greece with the kids in tow (Lara, her dog Barney, Rufus, Tom, Maye, plus Daisy from across the street) – their plan is to rescue Dee and be home before anyone notices they’re gone (by “anyone”, they mean Lara’s mom Sarah, and Daisy’s parents).

After landing in Greece and renting an old boat named the Athena, the group sets out to explore the many islands dotting the Ionian Sea in the search for Dee. They quickly cross paths with two sinister looking men, which begins a desperate chase over land and sea. What deep sea treasure are the villains in search of and how far will they go to make sure our young friends don’t find out their secrets?

Another rollicking adventure for our intrepid gang of friends

This is the sixth book in Jemma Hatt’s The Adventurers series and every book continues to be a fun and enjoyable romp. I love the characters, their friendship, and the globetrotting exploits. It’s a great story for kids (and those who are young at heart). The action is fast-paced from the get-go and it’s a bit of an adrenaline rush as the group rush from one location to another. I think the quick pace will hold the attention of young minds and keep them turning the pages. I know I read the entire book in one sitting.

The books have a lot of great lessons for kids, including trusting your friends, learning to think through problems, working together a team, and being curious about other countries and cultures. Of course, there’s a bit of ‘this would never happen in real life’ disbelief to the stories, as it’s hard to believe a group of kids and their bumbling (but kind-hearted) uncle could get into so many crazy adventures around the world, but isn’t that the point of reading?

My little nephew is only five so is still a bit too young to enjoy these books with me, but I already have a set of The Adventurers on my bookshelf, just waiting for him (and his baby sister) to hit the right age so that I can introduce them to Lara, Barney, Rufus and the rest of the gang. I know we’ll have many adventurous storytimes together.
